Disassembling a Golf Cart Rear Axle
Disassembling the rear axle of a golf cart can be a necessary task for maintenance or repairs. Properly handling this process ensures safety and prevents damage to the vehicle. Here's a stepbystep guide:
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket and wrench set
- Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
- Pliers
- Hammer
- Penetrating oil
- Clean rags
- Container for parts
Ensure the golf cart is on a level surface. Use the jack to lift the rear of the cart and securely support it on jack stands.
Use the appropriate socket to loosen and remove the lug nuts. Take off the wheels and set them aside.
Depending on the cart model, you may need to disassemble the brake assembly. Remove any retaining clips or bolts holding the brake drum or rotor in place. Detach the brake caliper carefully to avoid damaging brake lines.

Locate the axle shaft where it connects to the differential. Use a suitable socket to remove the bolts or nuts securing the axle shaft to the differential housing.
Position a drain pan under the differential and remove the cover bolts. Gently pry off the cover and allow the gear oil to drain completely.
With the differential cover off, slide the axle shaft out from the differential. Be careful not to damage the axle seals.
Inspect the axle shaft for any damage or wear. Replace if necessary with a new or refurbished part.
Reinstall the axle shaft into the differential. Replace the differential cover with a new gasket or sealant. Refill the differential with the appropriate gear oil.
Reinstall the brake components in the reverse order of removal. Ensure all parts are securely fastened.
Put the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the golf cart from the jack stands.
Before driving, test the brakes and check for any leaks from the differential. Take a short test drive to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
By following these steps carefully, you can safely disassemble and reassemble the rear axle of a golf cart. If you encounter any challenges or are unsure about any step, consult the vehicle's service manual or seek assistance from a qualified technician.
